Bunnies!

There are rabbits in my neighbourhood who seem to have dominion over the local landscaping. It is a Nanaimo thing. They are everywhere. Most of them are black but some are grey and some have streaks of white.

During the winter I didn’t see any of them. I don’t know where they went or how they survived, but now that spring has arrived, they have reappeared. This week, I think I figured out what they have been doing all winter. Their babies appeared on my patio.

They have been nibbling at the grass that grows between the cracks in the paving stones and on the lower extremities of the trees and shrubs. The gardener is probably tearing her hair out, but I am loving them. They are too cute to banish.

  1. Cute indeed!

There is a rabbit/s(?) that we see on walks or when we drive that way two streets down from our spot. My kids called it Gutter Rabbit as it tends to disappear down a storm drain if it thinks you may have spotted it.

  2. We have rabbits here, but they are brown. Definitely see them in the winter and the summer. They are nocturnal and come out in the twilight. In the really cold winter I put out pieces of my multigrain bread crusts for them which they eat – or else the squirrels do, or the chipmunks. My son and his family have pet bunnies and they urged me to give them rabbit chow from the pet store, but they wouldn’t touch it. I suspect your bunnies are descended from pets. It Red Deer there were jack rabbits.

    • You are probably right in thinking these rabbits are descended from pets. They seem to find plenty to eat around here but I did notice some people had put out food for them during the winter.
