Preventing Bird Accidents

Recently, the evening sky reflected onto my glass patio doors has caused some dismay. There have been at least three bird collisions in the past week. I checked to make sure the birds were all right, and they all flew away after a brief period of recovery.

I could see that this was going to be a problem, especially since I now enjoy seeing a flock of starlings swooping about every evening. I don’t know how big a flock has to be in order to become a murmuration, but I’m happy to see them no matter what they are called.

The last time I was at the backyard birds store I was shown some anti-collision decals and regretted not buying some at the time. This week, I was unable to go to the store right away so I ordered some online instead and I made sure to get the ones with ultraviolet reflection. They arrived the next day.

So far, they seem to have done the trick. After two days there have been no collisions, and I noticed a few last minute changes of direction as birds came very close but veered off before hitting the glass. If you have large windows that reflect the sky, I recommend these decals.

  1. My daughter had this problem a few years ago and she also got the decals. The black ones did not work so well as they blended in with the darkness inside, so she got white ones and they seem to do the trick. I hadn’t heard of decals with ultraviolet reflection. I’ll have to tell her.

  2. Coincidentally, my neighbor told me on Monday that windows were the second highest killer of wild birds, the first being cats….especially feral ones. Good job saving the birds and they look pretty as well!
