Yesterday morning I took a stroll along Departure Bay Beach and was surprised to see some hardy folks actually swimming in those cold waters. The beach was busy with people enjoying the almost-spring weather and the lovely wide view. As always, I was particularly fascinated by the pleasing and sometimes intriguing driftwood shapes.

I was told that Departure Bay was named by Europeans on seeing First Nations people leaving on a seasonal migration. Apparently the Europeans didn’t realize they would also be returning! That story, though, may simply be folklore.
Here is Diana Krall singing Departure Bay.
What a lovely voice Diana Krall has; thanks for the link!
Isn’t she wonderful?
Yes, I anticipate listening to her again!
There are some local references in that song, but even if you don’t recognize them, it’s still great!
Yep, I missed the references but still enjoyed the song.
Hint: The Malahat is a highway.
