So, how are you filling your days now that it is winter and the election is over? Me, I’m just killing thyme. (Ba-dum-tss!)
Before we had a huge snowfall and the temperature dropped to minus double digits, I managed to take the herbs out of our garden and put them in pots. My plan was to give some away and try to save some for use during the winter. If any survive long enough, I hope to replant them outdoors in the spring.
The trouble I have had is that not enough light gets in to my suite to adequately nurture any plants. Also, the temperature on the window sill is five degrees (Celcius) colder than the rest of the room.
In order to try to keep the herbs alive, I have bought a grow light from Amazon and moved the pots to the kitchen counter. I’ve been using the light for about a week now and it seems to have caused one of the pots of thyme to grow much faster, to the point where it is becoming nearly all stem with very small leaves.
Another pot of a different kind of thyme was already almost dead because I over-watered it. I’m waiting to see if it comes back to life.
The third pot seems to be doing fairly well, but that is odd because it is the twin of the first pot. I subdivided the original plant and put one half into a bigger pot and one into a smaller pot. It seems to be happier in the bigger pot. My spare pots and soil are out in the garden shed and I don’t feel like going out in the cold to get them yet. Maybe later.
In the mean time, I just wanted an excuse to write a blog post with the headline Killing Thyme so that I could imagine you all groaning loudly. Did I succeed?
